Arizona Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio received a bomb in the mail that was detonated without incident at the Flagstaff post office yesterday.
“America’s Toughest Sheriff” has made a name for himself as a staunch conservative who opposes all forms of immigration reform. He has enraged many human rights groups and immigrant advocates for his treatment of jailed prisoners.
A sharp postal inspector thought a package addressed to Arpaio looked suspicious and brought it to the attention of authorities. The package tested positive for explosive materials. The FBI and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives used a water cannon to detonate the package after x-raying its content.
Arpaio who has held elected office for 20-years has been the target of numerous threats, with 9 credible threats being investigated since 2011. It is not known if the soon to be released comprehensive immigration reform bill inspired the threat. The Sheriff has been accused of civil rights violations for his treatment of undocumented prisoners and for allegedly targeting Latinos in the state with unwarranted arrests.
Arpaio’s office is currently not opening mail.
