Border Protection Officers Find 48 lbs of Cocaine in Gas Tank

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers working at the Andrade port of entry yesterday discovered 48 pounds of cocaine concealed in the gas tank of a vehicle.

On Monday night, at about 9:00 p.m., a CBP officer conducting inspections of vehicles and travelers referred a white 1992 Jeep Cherokee after detecting anomalies to the jeep’s gas tank.

CBP officers conducted an intensive examination of the vehicle and discovered 19 wrapped packages of cocaine concealed inside a non-factory compartment in the tank. The street value of the narcotic is estimated at approximately $576,000.

The driver, a 26-year-old male U.S. citizen and resident of Yuma, Arizona, was arrested and transported to the Imperial County Jail to await arraignment in federal court for the alleged smuggling attempt.
