Brazil’s INPA research institute and Japan’s Kyoto University have reached an agreement to map the genome of the Amazon manatee.
The project, the first with aquatic mammals in Brazil, consists of creating a map of the manatee’s DNA sequence using cutting edge equipment from the Japanese university and allowing researchers to gather information about the species, according to a note from INPA.
One of the project leaders, Vera Silva, said the equipment used is capable of accelerating the research and permitting a complete analysis of the genome.
“After mapping the genome, we will be able to expand even more the level of research and understanding of the animal’s biology and ecology, by, for example, identifying more easily its illnesses, parasites and feeding habits, among others,” she said.
