The Dominican Republic stages Tuesday the first Soberano Awards gala, an event that honors local art and show business, and which will feature performances by the Mexican duo Jesse & Joy, Venezuelan Ricardo Montaner, Puerto Rico’s Don Omar, and the Dominican Prince Royce.
The Soberanos replace the Casandra Awards, on which the curtain rang down forever last year due to a conflict between the descendents of the one-time songstress and dancer Casandra Damiron and the event’s organizers.
The new ceremony will also feature performances by Dominican merengue stars Toño Rosario and Los Rosario, bachata artist Anthony Santos and the Dominican-Mexican duo Tercer Cielo, the organizers said Tuesday.
The showbiz reporters association Acroarte, which organizes the Soberano Awards, will give special recognition to Montaner and to the Dominican singer with the prodigious voice and a 40-year career in showbiz, Luchy Vicioso.
The event, to he held at the Eduardo Brito National Theater in Santo Domingo, will also have onstage local salsa artists Yiyo Sarante, Sexappeal, David Kada and Victor Wail, and the performers of urban music Carlitos Way and Crazy Design, popularly known as the Teke Teke.
