France’s lower house of parliament has voted to pass a draft law overhauling the country’s labor system despite widespread protests against the bill, Reuters reported. The National Assembly adopted the draft bill, which introduces a series of measures to loosen firing and hiring rules. Thousands protested outside parliament during the vote, and trade unions arranged marches in cities across the country. In Marseille, demonstrators marched carrying banners which read, “No to breaking the labor code.” The measures have been seen as the most comprehensive labor reforms since World War II. Accusations from the left that President Francois Hollande has abandoned socialism could affect his already low approval ratings and hurt his party’s performance in municipal elections next year.
