JUST IN: Latina Women Injured During Police Search for Rogue Cop Dorner Get $4.2M Settlement
The Los Angeles Police Department and the City of Los Angeles have reached a $4.2 million settlement with the Latina mother and daughter injured during the manhunt for rogue cop Christopher Dorner.
Back on February 7, 2013, 71-year-old Emma Hernandez and her 47-year-old daughter, Margie Carranza, were injured when LAPD opened fire on the pickup they were driving to deliver newspapers at 5 a.m.
The shooting occurred during the massive manhunt for former cop Christopher Dorner who eventually died in a shoot out in a Big Bear Lake mountain cabin. The mother and daughter’s Tacoma pick up was mistaken for Dorner’s Nissan Titan truck. The mother and daughter duo were traveling in the vicinity where Dorner was thought to be.
Just before the shooting incident with the Latina mother and daughter, Dorner had ambushed two police officers in their car. He was also being sought for the ambush killings of the daughter of a former police official and her finance.
Carranza sustained two gunshot wounds to her back and Hernandez was injured by flying glass. It is believe LAPD fired a total of 100-rounds of ammunition into their vehicle.
In addition to the $4.2M settlement the women were paid $40,000 to replace their pickup truck. LAPD acknowledged the error and noted that LAPD were on heightened alert and under “incredible tension” during the Dorner manhunt.
