Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced Thursday he’s placing expanded gun-purchase background checks on ice, bringing a sudden halt to a months-long debate as he and other gun control advocates nevertheless vowed to fight another day.
Mr. Reid said Thursday that after speaking with President Obama, the best option going forward after the measure was defeated in the Senate Wednesday was to “hit pause” and regroup.
“This will allow Senators to keep negotiating,” he said. “We’re going to come back to this bill.”
Earlier Thursday, Mr. Reid vowed to continue the fight personally and said that “the brand of the Republicans is further tarnished” by voting against the will of a majority of Americans.
“Even the people selling the guns think there should some background check[s],” the Nevada Democrat said on the Senate floor. “Make no mistake — the debate is not over.”
“Republicans are in an unsustainable position,” he said. “I personally will continue this fight.”
