GUANTANAMO BAY, CUBA – SEPTEMBER 16: A U.S. military guard moves an ‘enemy combatant’ within the detention center on September 16, 2010 in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. (Photo by John Moore/Getty Images)
Over the past several weeks the situation at Guantanamo Bay has gotten very ugly. Detainees are protesting their imprisonment and cruel treatment with a hunger strike, and are being attacked and force fed by guards as a result.
The attitude among many people, especially in America, has been one of indifference, because people actually believe that these detainees deserve what they are getting.
However, many of these people don’t understand that all of these Guantanamo Bay detainees have never been found guilty of any crime, or even charged with a crime to begin with. They just happen to be captured and declared an enemy combatant by the government one day and taken to a torture camp.
It is probobly true that some of the prisoners are guilty, even a broken clock is right twice a day, but a good number of them are probobly innocent, and even a guilty person deserves due process.
