Reporters Without Borders Urges Mexico to Investigate Plot Against Reporter

Reporters Without Borders on Thursday asked Mexico to respond to allegations that officials in the Gulf coast state of Veracruz hatched a plot to harm a journalist.

The Paris-based organization, known by the French initials RSF, cited accusations by Mexican news magazine Proceso.

“On 16 April, the weekly accused current and former state officials of plotting against its reporter Jorge Carrasco, who has been investigating fellow Proceso reporter Regina Martinez’s April 2012 murder in the Veracruz capital of Xalapa,” RSF said.

Though the Veracruz attorney general denied the allegation, Carrasco decided to go into hiding.

“A full explanation must be provided by the Veracruz authorities regarding the serious allegations that the magazine Proceso has leveled against them,” RSF said.

The press freedom watchdog also demanded information about the status of the search for Veracruz newspaper photographer Sergio Landa, who went missing six weeks ago not long after he was briefly abducted by an armed group.

Veracruz, according to RSF is “one of the world’s most dangerous places for journalists.”
