Albuquerque police have arrested 24-year-old Lawrence Capener for the multiple stabbing incident at the St. Judas Thaddeus Church yesterday afternoon.
Capener allegedly without apparent provocation starting stabbing choir members around 12:15 p.m. after leaping from his pew and yelling out “Fake Preacher!”
Capener was tackled by church members but not before four individuals were stabbed with non-life threatening injuries. Capener has been formally charged this morning with three counts of aggravated battery and according to AP is being held in jail on a $75,000 bond.
This mega-church of the Albuquerque Archdiocese was recently expanded to accommodate 1,200 churchgoers. Albuquerque’s west side has seen a lot of growth and population diversity over the last several years. Archbishop of Sante Fe Michael Sheehan reports that on average 4,000 parishioners attend Sunday mass at St. Judas Thaddeus.
