(Before It's News)

According to a recent poll, nearly a third of registered voters believe an “armed revolution” might be necessary in order to restore personal liberties in the near future – helping explain why applications for gun permits and ammo sales have hit record highs.

According to a national survey conducted by Fairleigh Dickinson University’s PublicMind, 50 percent of voters believe Congress should pass laws to protect the public from gun violence, while 39 percent say the complete opposite. Among Republicans, 65 percent don’t believe new gun control legislation is even necessary in light of the Sandy Hook mass shooting.

“Partisan views have strongly re-asserted themselves, and there’s no sign that they’ll get any weaker,” said Dan Cassino, a political science professor at Farleigh Dickinson and one of the study’s authors “The differences in views of gun legislation are really a function of differences in what people believe guns are for.”

Despite concerns over impending gun legislation, the poll suggests some voters believe rebellion is on the horizon.  29 percent agreed that armed revolution might be necessary to protect civil liberties. As Cassino explains it,“If you truly believe an armed revolution is possible in the near future, you need weapons and you’re going to be wary about government efforts to take them away.” Among those who said yes, 44 percent were Republicans – who also eschew gun control.

The poll of 863 registered voters was conducted nationally by telephone between April 22 through April 28, with a margin of error of 3.4 percentage points.
