The British Home Secretary has stepped up attempts to re-draft the controversial Communications Data Bill, known as the ‘Snooper’s Charter’, in the wake of the recent murder of a soldier in a London street.
The bill, which was first published last year, drew wide opposition from across the political establishment with Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg withdrawing his support from the bill in April on the grounds that it was an invasion of privacy.
However, Home Secretary Theresa May on Sunday described as “essential” granting spying agencies the capacity to access communications data, which means controlling all contacts people may make via telephone, mobile phone, Internet or other devices.
After the murder of a British soldier in a Woolwich street, southeast London last week, which happened on broad daylight, there were also proposals for the government to tighten its Internet surveillance, alongside tighter controls on extremist groups.
