Good Sunday dear reader and welcome not only to the start of vacation summer, but to my zombie like ramblings! It ain’t easy being be….
Am I the only one that remembers when we had four different seasons on this spinning ball we call home? You know, fall, winter, spring, and, summer? Sure this has always been the opening of madhouse vacation but temp wise. Oh, the days past when this world gave you time to adjust and not just broil and freeze. I took yesterday off, (yes no work of any sort), and just wondered. I went in shops and I must say, both patrons and shop owners thinks that summer is here.
Time for some RX refills and the drugstore was PACKED! Both with people and summer garbage. Twenty dollar flip-flops, twenty dollar, tanning oil, and twenty dollar one ply beach towels! What, doesn’t anyone pack anymore to go on holiday? Business is happy with such folly for the simple reason they can take advantage and no one is the wiser it would seem. Perhaps I should give up (NOT!) monster hunting and open a “Stuff You Were Too Lazy To Pack” Store on each street corner. Not to mention the rise in the price of gas! When people go camping, it a massive RV, pulling a SUV and bike’s all over the thing like lint on black pants. You lie when you say you went camping because will all you got you went parking.
I remember the summer season when I was just a mini monster hunter. You packed a cooler with eats and drinks, you had a tent and for entertainment, you had a book, or you made up games along the way. All the while in a two sedan with both parents and all the kids, (9 in my family), who did not scream or get too loud because you knew better. Looking back we had to look like we were sneaking across a border somewhere and not a state line. You thought nothing of it because all that passed were doing the same thing. Eyes and mouths plastered against the windows that you cry for help if they only had room. Need I mention the stop of gas every few hundred miles so you’d better be able to hold it.
Everyone sported a “farmers tan” then too. What is that you ask? It’s where your face, neck and arms is all that gets a tan, and then just after the skin peeled a few times first. Now they spend good money on all the oils, beds and the like to age their skin years in days?? All this prep for just a few days a year? Do they go in debt and just have it paid off in time to do it again in a year? Don’t even get me started on the battleships they toe and call them boats!
Looking back, I do miss all four seasons, holidays, and the adventure that each brought. Telling stories around a campfire, cooking the fish on an open fame, the howl of wolves, starlit nights, and quiet. Our water parks were a tube and a clear creek. Each four seasons brought on a new challenge for your wardrobe and which sleeping bag you brought. Ah, the brisk fall nights and colors where a joy this side of Heaven for all involved. Good times, poor times, different times.
Now sadly, it seems those days and seasons are gone for good. Leisure and seasons have been replaced it rush and the sound of swiping a plastic card for that forty-dollar t-shirt that says you went there. No more leaves in the page of a book or a pine cone spray painted with you’re very own hand. No staying here unless you can blog, tweet, or Facebook the entire vacation, no sir. Roughing it now is 3G only.
What does it say about the human race? It says were too busy to enjoy what little is left and we took things for granted. Global warming or the work of a being more powerful that us all is the two choices we have left. Myself, I think a mountain full of trees changing colors is better than any water park so can we see if we can stop pumping in the air and take time to smell what roses we have left?
