KNOXVILLE — A school security guard remains on paid leave today after being involved in a weekend shooting outside a private club, authorities said.
Rondal Capshaw was placed on leave Monday, Knox County Schools spokeswoman Melissa Ogden said. He has worked for the school system since 2008.
Capshaw, 62, was working a side job as a security guard Saturday around 1:10 a.m. at the Elks Club, 3919 Holston Drive, in East Knoxville when an argument inside the club spilled out into the parking lot, Knoxville Police Department spokesman Darrell DeBusk said. Capshaw ultimately drew his gun and shot Jefferson Grady, 38, in the groin, DeBusk said.
Grady, who’s on parole for an aggravated burglary conviction, insists he was unarmed and just trying to separate two friends.
“I didn’t do anything,” Grady said today. “I just tried to defuse the situation, and he shot me.”
Charges are pending against Capshaw, DeBusk said. He didn’t say what charges.
More details as they develop online and in Thursday’s News Sentinel.
