The Assocaited Press is reporting Mexican authorities have arrested two people in connection with the beating death of Malcolm X’s troubled grandson, Malcolm Shabazz.
Shabazz died from blunt force trauma after leaving a bar in Mexico City. It was first reported that Shabazz died after being robbed, reports since then say a dispute started in a bar over an unpaid bar tab of $1,200. Reportedly the bar was located near the fabled Plaza Garibaldi, home to the capital city’s mariachis.
The 28-year-old had numerous run-ins with the law including setting a fire in his grandmother’s home. The widow of the controversial civil rights leader later died from her injuries. As a then 12-year-old Shabazz served a 18-month prison sentence for intentionally setting the fire. Since then he has been in prison and in trouble with the law for a myriad of crimes from robbery to vandalism.
Mexican authorities have confirmed they have arrested two male suspects that are employees of the bar Shabazz was at and where the dispute originated.
Shabazz was the son of Qubilah one of Malcolm X’s six daughters with wife Betty Shabazz. He died from his injuries in a Mexico City hospital on Thursday.
