The following are highlights of an art therapy program conducted by National Intrepid Center of Excellence at Walter Reed Medical Center meant to treat soldiers of traumatic brain injuries and other psychological issues.

The program is designed to allow the patients to translate their trauma using nonverbal means of expression, which has been researched to be beneficial in treatment. ‘It gives them a way to express to us, visually, what they’re going through. It’s a little less intimidating then handing them a blank piece of paper,’ states Melissa Walker, one of the programs art therapists.

More can be read on the program over on NBC.
