Nine people have been killed and seven have been injured in clashes between rival clans in Kenya™s North Eastern Province, which is on the border with Somalia, security sources say.
In the first incident, which occurred in Mandera county on Friday night, four people were killed, including a Kenyan reservist police officer who had tried to intervene, in clashes between members of the Degodia and Garreh clans.
That was followed by a œretaliatory attack of the earlier one” that claimed the lives of five more people in Wajir county, according to a Kenyan police officer.
“The two communities were fighting, there are people killed and others injured, but we have deployed more police officers to the region to restore peace,” Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo said.
The Kenyan authorities have also established inter-clan committees to help restore stability in the region.
There are many bloody tribal clashes over access to water and pasture and cattle rustling, and subsequent revenge attacks, in northeastern Kenya.
