French leftist attacked by neo-Nazis
A young French far-left activist has been declared brain dead he was attacked by a group of neo-Nazis in central Paris in what police call a œpolitically motivated incident.”
France™s Interior Minister Manuel Valls said Clement Meric, 18, was œhit extremely violently by several skinheads” in a fight on Wednesday.
A police source said four people were being held in connection with the attack which has left Meric brain dead in hospital.
A preliminary police inquiry indicated that a group of œskinhead types” stepped into a shop where Meric was attending a clothes sale with friends.
Witnesses told police that angry words were exchanged before the attackers left œto fetch reinforcements”.
After leaving the shop, Meric œwas hit by one of the skinheads who wore brass knuckles and fell on the sidewalk, hitting a bollard.”
Valls accused the far-right for the incident, saying, œa group of the extreme right is at the heart of this assassination. There is a discourse of hate and a climate that favors this discourse. We need to pay attention to this because they threaten our values.”
Meric belonged to the Left Party (Parti de Gauche) which gave a statement after the attack accusing the extreme far Revolutionary Nationalist Youth (JNR) group for the assault.
Several other left-wing parties have called for people to rally on Thursday evening for œthe dissolution of ultraviolent far right groups.”
