Iran lauds Syria army for Qusayr victory
Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi has congratulated the Syrian nation and government on the victory of their army in regaining control of the strategic town of Qusayr in Western Syria.
In a Wednesday telephone conversation, the Iranian minister congratulated his Syrian counterpart, Walid al-Muallem.
Salehi pointed to attempts by foreign-backed Takfiri extremists to militarize the turmoil in Syria, adding that a national dialogue between the Syrian government and its opposition bloc would be the only way out of the ongoing crisis.
Qusayr has been an important center and supply route for the foreign-sponsored militants fighting against the Damascus government.
Earlier in the day, Syria™s state television reported that Syrian forces had regained full control of Qusayr following three weeks of fighting with foreign-sponsored militants.
The Iranian diplomat also expressed hope that blocking the illegal transfer of weapons to Syria would help to end the bloodshed, and can also herald the beginning of a political process aimed at settling the unrest ahead of the upcoming Geneva 2 conference.
For his part, the Syrian official expressed gratitude to Iran over its compassionate assistance in dealing with the turmoil gripping the Arab country.
œThe Syrian government and nation have been determined and firm in defending their grand ideals and will continue their path until the establishment of peace and stability al-Muallem said.
Many of the foreign-backed militants and members of the armed groups were reportedly killed or injured during the Syrian army operation to clean Qusayr from terrorists.
Foreign-sponsored militancy in Syria, which erupted in March 2011, has taken its toll on the lives of many people, including large numbers of Syrian soldiers and security personnel.
