The White House on Thursday acknowledged that it is collecting massive amounts of telephone records from at least one carrier, but defended the practice as a “critical tool in protecting the nation from terrorist threats to the US.” The admission comes after the Guardian published a secret court order covering the records of millions of Verizon Communications customers. The order pertains only to data such as a telephone numbers or call lengths, not the subscribers’ identities or the content of calls, Reuters quoted a senior administration official as saying.
