One of Britain™s top cardiologists says the National Health Service (NHS) is in an œappalling” state, œwrecked” by shambolic managers.
Jane Somerville, who established the first adolescent cardiology ward at the National Heart Hospital in London in 1995, warned at the Desert Island Discs radio program that œinterfering” managers have devastated the system and scandals like the Mid Staffordshire Hospital chaos.
œI think this erratic care…I think Staffordshire is not alone,” the veteran physician said.
Her warning came after an inquiry found back in February that failings at œevery level” of the hospital led to up to 1,200 deaths between 2005 and 2009.
The findings led to calls for a shake-up of the health watchdogs and consideration of criminal charges for those behind such incidents.
The Mid Staffordshire Hospital deaths also led the British Prime Minister David Cameron to call for arrangements to prevent such œappalling neglect and mistreatment” in the future.
However, the warning by Somerville has sparked fears that Cameron has settled for just words rather than actions over the past months.
This comes as the NHS was hit by another scandal last month after revelations that 16 babies and mothers died because of poor care at Morcambe Bay health centers.
Health watchdog, the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO), said at the time that they are investigating a number of other complaints by families of victims of NHS failures.
