WASHINGTON, D.C. — The average American may have to pay more for healthcare reform changes, but members of Congress and their staffers won’t.
In a deal reportedly brokered by President Obama, the government — meaning your tax dollars — will foot a chunk of the bill for many on Capitol Hill.
Members of Congress and their staff still must enroll in health care exchanges, but instead of having to pay full premiums for health care — like many individuals in the country — the government will subsidize their cost.
Right now, the government pays about 75 percent of premiums for Congress and their staff. If members of Congress were held accountable to the law they passed, they would have to pay 100 percent of their premiums for care.

The deal to subsidize premiums is a relief for staffers like Ed McDonal, who’s worked on Capitol Hill for 28 years and was thinking about leaving if a new deal had not been made.
“I’d like to keep the doctors I currently have, and keep the health care plan that I currently have,” he said.
If members and their staffers were forced to pay like many Americans will be, it could have been up to $700 per month.
“If young people look at paying six, seven, eight hundred dollars a month for health care when they’re making $30,000 per year, they won’t be able to afford to take these jobs,” he said.
