Thousands of people across the United States took to the streets on Saturday demanding that President Barack Obama protect the environment by rejecting the controversial Keystone XL pipeline.
The pipeline is intended to funnel Canada™s carbon-heavy oil sands across the United States to huge refineries on the Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coasts.
More than 200 rallies were set to take place in all 50 US states as communities say œno” to climate change and dirty tar sands oil extraction.
The rallies were spearheaded by the climate campaign 350.org.
“We have people out across the country to draw attention to expanded tar sands production and send a message to the president to draw line on Keystone XL,” Daniel Kessler of 350.org told Common Dreams.
In Washington, protests were planned in Lincoln Park and in Seattle, climate-change activists rally stopped the proposed new export terminal for coal, according to The Globe and Mail.
In Detroit, protesters rallied at the city™s tar sands refinery, which is spewing pollution into Detroit community.
Opposition to the pipeline has mounted in recent months. In February, 40,000 people gathered in Washington, D.C. to demand President Obama reject the pipeline.
The rallies are supported by Friends of the Earth, Bold Nebraska, Sierra Club, Better Futures Project, Credo Action, the Energy Action Coalition, Oil Change International, Rainforest Action Network, and the Tar Sands Blockade.
