Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff appeared before the United Nations today, describing US NSA spying a “breach of international law.” She warned that NSA surveillance was a threat to freedom of speech and democracy.
Members of the BRICS nations – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – have accelerated efforts to develop alternative systems to the current Anglo-American dominated world order. This new found coordination effort includes the development of independent bank credit to replace the role of the World Bank and currency swap arrangements to move 25% of the world’s trade away from US Dollar based settlement. These changes are substantial and largely unreported in the US mainstream media.
With the ongoing revelations about NSA spying, BRICS have stepped-up their efforts to develop alternative information networks as well. The flap over US spying, particularly when it comes to economic espionage and cases were Petrobras has been the target has motivated Brazil to accelerate the development of a private internet backbone infrastructure in partnership with Argentina and other BRICS nations. These developments are merely a symptom of the US hitting “peak empire.”
