Commuter Train Crash Injures 80 in Argentina

At least 80 people were injured early Saturday, five of them with broken bones, when a commuter train crashed through a barrier at one of the Argentine capital’s busiest stations, authorities said.

No one has been reported dead thus far, Security Secretary Sergio Berni said, adding that 36 people have been hospitalized.

The accident at Buenos Aires’ Once station occurred just after 7:00 a.m. Saturday morning when a commuter train on the Sarmiento line slammed into a bumper and ended up colliding with one of the station’s platforms.

Authorities are investigating the causes of the accident, although a representative of the engine drivers’ union, Horacio Caminos, told local media that the train’s brakes may have failed.

The judge investigating the case ordered the arrest of the train’s driver, who is currently under police watch at a hospital.

A similar crash at that same station in February 2012 left 51 dead and more than 500 injured, in what was one of the deadliest rail accidents in Argentine history.
