FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE…

Ojai, CA- October 23, 2013- The City of Ojai is contemplating installation of  two important crosswalks. The crosswalks are located on Aliso Street and Matilija Street. There is no crosswalk now on Aliso and the existing crosswalk at Matilija is substandard. Peak pedestrian traffic is encountered at both the locations during the Farmers Market which is held on Sundays. (photo: Ask Now Real Estate, Ojai, CA)

Public works Director Greg Grant has notified the general public about an informational meeting to be held on Wednesday, the 30th of October at the city hall at 6 pm. Public opinion will be solicited at the meeting. He said, “Pedestrian safety is very important to us. We want to get the public involved in the process as early as possible”. Conceptual drawings will be presented at the meeting and comments will be solicited. Principal Transportation Engineer Mohammed A. Hasan of the Ventura firm Hasan Consultants is leading the design efforts. “We try our best to keep the design people-friendly by thinking ahead what a pedestrian would appreciate when using the crosswalk”, Hasan said. Vehicle safety and ADA compliance (Americans with Disability Act) are incorporated in the design.  “We want everyone to be involved so that it becomes everyone’s project”.

Another important aspect of crosswalk design is traffic calming which may be achieved by using curb extensions as used elsewhere in the city. Proper signs are also important but avoiding too many signs is the key since too many signs may create the reverse effect. “We get a chance to hear the opinion of the neighbors and the public can hear our rationale for the design from technical people working on the project” says Grant. According to Grant, “Public-private cooperation is needed for successful operation of the crosswalks”.

If accepted by the public and approved by the Public Works Department, the project will finally be decided upon by the city council. The city hall  is located at 401 South Ventura Street, Ojai, CA.
