Cuba’s Mixed-Race Population Grows 25 Percent
The number of mixed-race people in Cuba continues to increase as the ranks of those identifying themselves as white or black declines, according to the results of the 2012 Census released Friday.
The proportion of mixed-race people grew from 24.9 percent in 2002 to 26.6 percent last year, the ONEI statistics agency said in an advance summary of the study.
In the same period of time, the population identifying itself as white dropped from some 65 percent to 64.1 percent, while blacks fell from 10.1 percent to 9.3 percent.
The final numbers indicate that Cuba’s population declined by 10,418 people between 2002 and 2012, to 11.16 million.
Statistics indicate that there are 995 men for every 1,000 women, while in 2002 there were 1,003 men for an equal number of women.
The indicators also point to an increase of women as heads of the household, from 40.6 percent to 44.9 percent in 10 years.
The Cuban population is predominantly urban – 76.8 percent.
The average age is 38.8 years, up from 35.1 in 2002, which confirms the aging of the island’s population, of whom 18.3 percent are 60 or older.
As for housing, the study reveals that the inventory of residences grew in recent years, and now Cuba has 3.88 million “housing units,” while 95.6 percent of the population say they own their own homes.
