Recognizing the unique challenges and often bleak financial circumstances that widows and widowers face, this fund offers HSLDA membership, curriculum scholarships, and emergency help so that dedicated widows/widowers can continue to direct their children’s education at home.

In November of 1999, a father in Virginia learned of the death of a fellow homeschooling father. Burdened by the family’s loss, and having heard similar reports in past years of families facing the same hard circumstances, he decided to establish a fund to assist widows with the financial costs of homeschooling their children. He presented the idea to the Home School Legal Defense Association, which enthusiastically agreed to help administer the fund. In March 2000, the Widows Fund was born.

The response from Home School Legal Defense Association members, as well as nonmembers, has been warm and overflowing. Even children have generously and sacrificially given to this fund from their small savings.
