Lighting a fire is only half the work completed. The way you build a fire – that is, your methods and your materials, can affect how long the fire will last. Remember to build a fire requires a lot of skill and practice. Here is a list of top 10 reliable fire starters. Careful not to commit arson.
10. Birch Bark:
The bark of down, dead birch trees (don’t strip living trees unless you life depends on it) contains flammable resins. Once lit a roll of birch bark will burn hot and long enough to start a fire in wet conditions.
9. Flint and Steel
Flint and steel was the standard fire-lighter for many centuries. Key to success is a good steel striker, a sharp piece of flint or a similar type of stone and a ready supply of char cloth (carbonized cotton or linen cloth), and plenty of practice is needed.
8. Waxed Egg Carton
Fill the chambers of a used egg carton with sawdust a charcoal briquette, dryer lint or a roll of newspapers etc. and fill with melted wax. This provides several minutes of steady flame for really difficult situations.
7. Ferrocerium Rod:
This man-made metallic material sparks at temperatures at 3,000°F when scraped with the blade of a knife or steel striker. Use tinder (cotton balls are probably your best choice) to catch the sparks to begin lighting your fire.
6. Birthday Candles:
Small candles (such as birthday candles) or chunks of larger candles burn for a few minutes and can make lighting tinder much, much easier for you. Birthday candles, especially, take up very little space and having a few of them in your go-bag is a good idea.
5. Lifeboat Matches:
These matches are made by several manufactures, look for high quality ones. They burn for ten to twelve seconds, and that can make a big difference in a life or death situation.
