Remember when the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released a solicitation for 3,454,000 rounds of .347 SIG Caliber Training Ammunition for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) earlier this year?
Well it’s all over the news that earlier today a gunman decked out in camoflage fired a rifle about 20 times into Los Angeles International Airport’s terminal three. (Earlier reports of a second shooter appear to be unconfirmed.) According to ABC News, a witness who was in the process of going through security to get on a plane said the gunman specifically asked him if he was TSA:
An eyewitness, Leon Saryan, told ABC News Radio that a “fairly young” gunman with a rifle came down a corridor in Terminal 3 and shot perhaps 20 times.
A TSA officer holding Saryan’s shoes was shot and wounded, he told ABC.
Saryan said the gunman asked him, “Are you TSA?”
“He saw me. He looked at me with a quizzical look and said, ‘TSA?’ And I just shook my head. So he moved on,” Saryan said.
Some outlets are already claiming the gun was an AR-15. Officials are also claiming the shooter was an off-duty TSA agent.
A TSA agent died of his wounds, and another two people were injured. Earlier reports claimed the suspect was taken into custody but, as of the time of writing this, his name has not been released and the LA Times is now reporting that the shooter has also been killed.
If there was any justification for a full-scale arming of the TSA, as it appears the DHS was already in the process of doing, this incident will surely be it.
