Venezuela’s Gabriela Isler Wins Miss Universe 2013, Four out of Five Finalists Were Hispanic
Venezuela’s Gabriela Isler took the Miss Universe 2013 title Saturday at the gala finals of the world’s most prestigious beauty contest, held at Moscow’s Crocus City Hall.
The 25-year-old Venezuelan will wear the gold and platinum Miss Universe crown for a year after being judged the world’s most beautiful over 85 other young women from the five continents.
Spain’s Patricia Yurena Rodriguez placed second in an emotional final in which four of the five finalists with hopes of taking the tiara were Latinas.
Besides Isler and Rodriguez, the Brazilian Jakelyne Oliveira and Ecuador’s Constanza Baez all came on strong for the longed-for crown that finally went to Venezuela, a country that has now won seven Miss Universe titles, second only to the United States with eight winners in 60 years.
The two finalists looked confused when the winner’s name was announced, because neither of them nor any of the reporters at the press center understood who had won the title.
At last it was the bouquet of flowers given first to the young beauty from Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and then the crown placed on the Venezuelan’s head, that made it clear which of the two had been proclaimed the new Miss Universe.
Ibero-America reigned supreme once more among the most beautiful women on the planet, since no less than eight of the original 16 finalists came from Spain and seven Latin American countries.
Besides the final four, the last phase was also contested by Fabiana Granados of Costa Rica, Yaritza Reyes of the Dominican Republic, Monic Perez of Puerto Rico and Nastassja Bolivar of Nicaragua.
