“Catching Fire” Was The Highest Grossing Film of 2013 in the U.S.

“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” starring Jennifer Lawrence, is the 2013 film that grossed the most in the United States, almost $410 million, while in the rest of the world it earned another $428 million, Lionsgate reported.

The studio said in a press release that last Thursday the movie topped the previous box-office record held by “Iron Man 3,” and with the $493,000 taken in that day, the total U.S. gross soared to $409.4 million, some $400,000 more than the film featuring Robert Downey Jr.

“Catching Fire,” in movie theaters for 49 days, also had the biggest box-office premiere in the month of November with $158.1 million. The film also surpassed the gross of the original “Hunger Games” ($408 million) not long since.

In the rest of the world, the film has brought in $428.8 million, leaving the global gross at $838.2 million, 20 percent more that the first part of the franchise.

“The ‘Hunger Games’ franchise continues to evolve into a truly global phenomenon,” said Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer.

Director Francis Lawrence artfully adapted the action and social critique of the Suzanne Collins novel to the screen, and in this sequel the leading character (Jennifer Lawrence) organizes an uprising against a system that makes a TV show out of the survival of the poorest.

The cast is rounded out by Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth and Woody Harrelson.

The franchise has two more sequels pending that are currently in production and will premiere in theaters on Nov. 21, 2014 and Nov. 20, 2015, under the titles “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part I” and “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2.”
