Spanish international Juan Mata is joining Manchester United, the defending Premier League champions said Friday.
“MUFC has reached agreement with Chelsea for the transfer of Juan Mata for a club record fee,” United said on Twitter. “The deal is subject to a medical and the agreement of personal terms. A further announcement will be made in due course.”
Mata shined at Chelsea in his first two seasons with the London club and was key in the Blues’ remarkable Champions League title run in 2012.
But the Spaniard has gotten little playing time this season, as coach Jose Mourinho – in his second stint at Chelsea – has favored Eden Hazard, Oscar and Willian over Mata.
Man United will pay Chelsea 37 million pounds ($61.06 million) for Mata, according to accounts in the British media.
The club’s previous record transfer fee was the 30.75 million pounds the Red Devils shelled out in 2008 to obtain striker Dimitar Berbatov from Tottenham Hotspur.
Chelsea is currently third in the Premier League, trailing first-place Arsenal by two points, while struggling Manchester United sits in seventh.
