The Sacramento Kings have announced that they will be the first professional sports team within the United States to accept the increasing popular cryptocurrency, Bitcoin.

The franchise has already begun accepting Bitcoin as a payment inside a team retail store in Sacramento, CA, and will begin accepting the digital currency as a payment for tickets and merchandise in its online store on March 1.

Kings majority owner Vivek Ranadive told ESPN.com that the move will allow “fans to keep their wallets at home, thanks to what will eventually be a ticketless and cashless environment at the arena.”

This is a giant step forward for the young digital currency which has only five years of existence and is beginning to find its place inside the real world marketplace.

The Kings announcement follows another great breakthrough for the currency as the major online retailer OverStock.com publicly stated that they are now accepting Bitcoin as payment.

As of the time this article is being written, a single Bitcoin is trading at just over $900 on the mtgox.com exchange.

Just last March, the digital currency was trading for only $40 dollars.

Without a doubt, Bitcoin enthusiasts are head over heels with excitement over the latest decisions by major players within the sports and retail industry to use the digital currency.
