TND Editorial: By Eric Dubin |
I’m sure many of you see the following scenario all the time. Some clod is yapping away on his mobile phone, oblivious to traffic conditions. Traffic suddenly slows and only by sheer luck, Mr. Clod escapes ramming the car ahead.
Enter the Renault KIWD Concept car, equipped with its own flying drone to send up and view traffic conditions. Wonderful. Now Mr. Clod has a new distracting toy. At least a mobile phone conversation can conceivably take place without too much diminished hand-to-eye coordination impacting the driver’s ability to react to the horizontal plane. Navigating a drone while driving would require extensive focus not only on road conditions, but also on the control panel and the flying arena above. Imagine trying to play two video games on two screens at the same time. Not good. Driving while flying would require simultaneous spatial thinking tasks, a level of multitasking beyond the capabilities of the Mr Clods of the world. Mr. Clod has a hard enough time dealing with just the straight line of sight and his mobile phone.
Maybe I’m cynical. But I hope I don’t see a day when this concept car hits the road. This isn’t a Jetsons‘ vision. It’s a disaster waiting to happen. It might be feasible when car drones have considerable artificial intelligence. But even then, this idea really should be left on the shelf. I’m getting a bit tired of those that glorify drones. How about you? At least with Amazon’s package delivery drones, dogs across the nation will have new toys to chase.
