International authorities say UN peacekeepers are too small, and woefully inadequate to stop the militias from massacre: thousands have been killed and millions are trying to outrun the ethnic cleansing.
DAKAR, Senegal — Tens of thousands of Muslims are being forced by Christian militias to flee the Central African Republic in what human rights groups and a top U.N. official characterized Wednesday as de facto ethnic cleansing. The violent exodus is highlighting the powerlessness of both a 1,600-member French peacekeeping force and the country’s shaky authorities to halt spiraling religious and ethnic violence, human rights groups say. Libreville – “Ethnic cleansing” is being carried out against Muslim civilians in the Central African Republic, with international peacekeepers unable to prevent it, Amnesty International said on Wednesday.
France’s defence minister earlier called on international forces deployed in the Christian-majority country to put an end to attacks by the militias “by force if needed”.
