A Michigan man shot himself in the head while demonstrating to his girlfriend his weapons were unloaded.
An Independence Township, Michigan, fatally shot himself in the head Sunday while demonstrating to his girlfriend his weapons were safe and unloaded.
The 36-year-old man was teaching his girlfriend how to use a firearm when the lesson went bad. He unloaded and placed the first two pistols to his head, and pulled the trigger. The third pistol, however, was still loaded, Huffington Post reports.
Alcohol was likely a factor in the shooting and his girlfriend told police he had been drinking for most of the day.
Three children, ages 7-, 10- and 12-year-olds were present inside the home at the time of the shooting. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Undersheriff Michael McCabe commented on the unusual safety method, saying, “[The situation] is pretty unique, as I have never heard of anyone testing out the safety of a gun by pointing at their head and pulling the trigger.”
