The Mexican government formally charged their other most famous billionaire Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman on charges of drug trafficking. The formal charges announced by Mexico’s Federal Judicial Council come as Chicago, New York and five other jurisdictions wait to see if the 56-year-old narco will face justice in their courts.
The Sinaloa cartel, which Guzman is the head of, does business in over 50 countries. While many jurisdictions have a price on Guzman’s head no one wants him more than U.S. – and of course his native country.
In Mexico, Guzman was charged on Sunday inside the maximum-security prison outside of Mexico City, where he is being held. Guzman also faces a battery of other charges in Mexico making a swift extradition to the U.S. unlikely. Mexico has something to prove: that it can keep Guzman locked up and that justice is not elusive inside Mexico. Upon his capture Mexico’s President Enrique Pena Nieto said his government “works to guarantee safety and the rule of law on Mexican soil.”
Guzman famously escaped a Mexican prison in 2001 after generously bribing everyone he could. He spent the next 13 years on the run until Saturday at 6:45 a.m. when he was captured in a Mazatlan condominium as he was about to start cooking his beauty-queen wife breakfast.
