The real reason for monotheism – it’s a lot cheaper. Instead of building multiple temples for each of Zeus, Apollo, Astarte, Vaal etc. you can build one temple for one god and be done with it. And, have the same effect on public if not better.
Civilizations that conquered others came to find out how expensive it got to appease all the followers in the new territories. And so, the Romans and the Egyptians, civilizations that lasted a long time, both arrived at necessity to switch to monotheism while confiscating the wealth from the old temples. Both the Roman and the Egyptian kings built a new capital with large walls. Both stored inside the confiscated wealth. Both paid the army well to guard this and built one big temple on proceeds. The rest of the wealth they kept. The Pharaoh Akhenaten was successful all the way except monotheism didn’t settle with the people and polytheism returned under pharaohs that followed. Constantine was also successful all the way and monotheism settled with the people as well for all future leaders to spin.
What about them the Muslim then?
The Muslim learned well from their ancestors who interacted with the Romans for a long time.
What about the Jews, someone may ask, who were always monotheistic?
Well, Jews are cheap, don’t you know.
