DOZENS of South Australian suburbs are home to potentially deadly radioactive waste storage, an Advertiser investigation has revealed.
Documents released under the Freedom of Information Act show the Environment Protection Authority has approved 36 facilities to store radioactive waste, eight years after the State Government refused to allow a secure waste dump to be built in the far north of the state.
The information was released after a one-year battle by Family First MLC Robert Brokenshire, who sought to confirm whether there was radioactive material stored in his local electorate.
But the EPA has refused to tell him or the public where the material, some held by private companies, is kept — even by postcode. Mr Brokenshire said it was unacceptable that the EPA would not reveal where the waste was being stored and he would pursue the matter with questions in Parliament.
Bill Bard says:
Where else have they put radioactive waste throughout the world?
