Announced at SHOT Show earlier this year, SIG Sauer is now shipping SIG516 and SIGM400 Carbon Fiber rifles. Marketed towards tactical shooters and law enforcement, these high-end carbines make good on their namesake and make heavy use of carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer in their construction.

Based on SIG’s established 516 and M400 rifles, these feature modular carbon-fiber handguards and slick carbon-fiber minimalist fixed buttstocks by Lancer Systems. The SIG516 uses SIG’s adjustable short-stroke gas-piston operating system and the M400 has a traditional direct-impingement action.

Lancer Systems is well-known for their excellent and durable carbon-fiber accessories, and for many SIG fans, this is a match made in heaven. The rails can be modified with Picatinny rail segments to fit the user’s needs.

The carbon-fiber handguards are free-floating to secure the best possible accuracy from these rifles. The 516 has an extra-long custom handguard that extends past the gas block for a forward grip.

Carbon-fiber polymers are well-known for their strength and durability while still being relatively lightweight. However, these are not ultralight guns, weighing in at seven pounds (7.1 for the SIG516). They’re built for hard use. The receivers are forged, machined 7075-T6 aluminum.

Both rifles measure in at 35 inches long and have 16-inch 5.56 NATO barrels. In addition to the carbon-fiber accessories the rifles come with match-grade two-stage triggers set with a 4.5-pound pull. They come with a 30-round smoked, semi-transparent magazine Also by Lancer. The grips are standard SIG pistol grips.

They also include a set of low-profile adjustable flip-up iron sights.

These new rifles don’t come cheap with the SIG516 Carbon Fiber priced at $2,504 and the relatively simpler SIGM400 Carbon Fiber at $2,132. Still, real-world prices are likely to be a few hundred dollars less, and that does include several hundred dollars’ of Lancer components.

The wait for these has been short and these rifles will be on store shelves soon and may be available in some places already. It’s not uncommon for some guns to take months before they’re even remotely available after being announced at SHOT Show. These are hitting the streets now.
