Director Anne Fletcher is negotiating joining the MGM movie project “Don’t Mess With Texas,” an action comedy in which Colombian actress Sofia Vergara will play an escaping prisoner and star with Reese Witherspoon, Variety magazine reported on Monday.
Witherspoon will play a bounty hunter who helps the prisoner flee while both characters are being pursued by corrupt police.
The script, written by David Feeney and John Quaintance, is a story in the mold of “Midnight Run,” but with a feminine twist.
Feeney and Quaintance are the executive producers of the series “Ben & Kate.”
Witherspoon and Vergara signed on to the project some time back, but filming will start during the period later this year when Vergara takes a break from her series “Modern Family.”
Fletcher, who is well-known for comedies such as “27 Dresses” and “The Proposal,” recently directed “The Guilt Trip,” starring Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand.
Witherspoon later this year will appear in “Inherent Vice” and “Wild,” the new films by Paul Thomas Anderson and Jean-Marc Vallee, respectively.
Vergara, meanwhile, will soon appear in the comedy “Chef,” in which she shares scenes with Jon Favreau, Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson, as well as in the action film “Heat,” starring Jason Statham and Stanley Tucci.
