Sustainable Man

“We do not see the world as it is, we see the world as we are, or…as we are conditioned to see it.”

Are we competitive, selfish, individualistic creatures by nature? What is human nature, anyway?

Dr. Gabor Maté reminds us that the only way to talk about human nature concretely is to remember that we have certain human needs– the need for companionship, close contact, love, to be accepted for who we are. If those needs are met, we develop into compassionate, cooperative, empathetic beings. Dr. Mate argues that the reason why the world is in the shape it is today is because those needs have gone unmet for so many people.
