Don’t look too horrified- it is actually legal to marry a first cousin in some countries. History has seen its share of such famous people who got married to their relatives.

10. Albert Einstein

Albert Einstein was German-born theoretical physicist but very few people know that he was an extremely unfaithful man and could not help but commit adultery. He married Elsa, his second cousin after divorcing his first wife. Elsa passed away 17 years later and he got involved with a number of women until his death. Now why would anybody want to have a relationship with such an odd looking man? Perhaps it was the wealth and money at that sparked the interest.

9. Charles Darwin

Charles Darwin came up with the theory of evolution and natural selection. He also married his first cousin and they had ten children with her; three of whom died at early ages.

8. Edgar Allan Poe

Edgar Allan Poe was an American author, poet, editor, and literary critic, who was part of the Romantic era. He moved in with his relatives when his mother died and father had abandoned him. He was 20 years old at the time and found himself falling in love with his seven year old cousin. He waited for 6 years after which the two got married; she was 13 at the time. Some biographers argue that the couple’s relationship was more like that between brother and sister rather than like husband and wife in that they may have never consummated their marriage. In January 1842 she contracted tuberculosis, growing worse for five years until she died of the disease at the age of 24 in the family’s cottage outside New York City.

7. Jerry Lee Lewis

Jerry Lee Lewis is 77 years old and was one of the earliest pioneers of rock and roll music. He gotmarried to Myra, his cousin in 1957 and that combined with the fact that the girl was only 13 years old created a lot of controversy and the singer lost a lot of respect among his fans. He had two children with her.

6. Rudy Giuliani

Rudy Guiliani married a woman who he thought to be his third cousin. It wasn’t until many years of marriage that they realized that they were related, in fact they were second cousins. Regina and Rudy divorced in 1982, and Rudy married his second wife Donna Hanover in 1984.

Giuliani served two terms as Mayor of New York City. He made significant improvements to the city’s quality of life and reduced crime. He ran for the United States Senate in 2000 but withdrew after he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Giuliani gained international attention for his leadership during and after the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center. For his actions that tragic da, he was named Time Person of the Year in 2001, and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2002.
