Argentine Government Reports 89 Died During Flooding of 2013

The death toll almost a year ago in the Argentine city of La Plata has been raised to 89 from the 51 deaths initially reported, the Argentine Justice Ministry announced Tuesday.

Judge Luis Arias, who is in charge of the investigation of the fatalities during the tragic storm that hit Buenos Aires province, confirmed the higher death toll to local media.

Initially, when flood waters inundated La Plata, located 60 kilometers (37 miles) south of Buenos Aires, last April, authorities reported 51 fatalities, although a few weeks later that tally was raised to 67 amid great controversy over the precise death toll.

Argentine President Cristina Fernandez had demanded that the Justice Ministry clarify the number of victims.

In a ruling, Arias ordered the government of Buenos Aires province to release the data pertaining to the 89 deaths “via the same communications media through which the imprecise information was made known.”
