Carnival Bridge Collapses Killing 4, Injuring 60 in Bolivia

Four people were killed and 60 others injured when a footbridge collapsed during the carnival in the Bolivian city of Oruro, officials said Sunday.

The accident, which occurred on Saturday, is under investigation, the Oruro province prosecutor’s office said.

“We have decided to begin criminal proceedings against subjects to investigate this incident due to the magnitude of dead and injured,” Oruro Attorney General Orlando Riveros told the official ABI news agency.

Police experts will determine why the walkway collapsed, Riveros said.

Bolivian Government Minister Carlos Romero said on Saturday that indications were that the footbridge collapsed due to overloading.

The Communications Ministry released a list Sunday of the injured, who include at least 10 minors.

The carnival in Oruro has been listed by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 2001.

The footbridge collapsed as about 35,000 dancers and 10,000 musicians participated in the carnival’s entrance, the biggest event during the Oruro festival.
