Two SUVs holding “human remains” have been found buried in the mountains of southern Guatemala, authorities said Friday.
Police discovered the vehicles in the municipality of Amatitlan, 32 kilometers (20 miles) from Guatemala City, deputy interior minister Eddy Juarez said.
The scene of the excavation has been surrounded by police for the last four days.
Authorities were led to the site by information obtained after the arrest of three suspected members of the Los Sierra Ovando gang, a criminal outfit that includes former and active-duty police officers, Juarez said.
Los Sierra Ovando is blamed for some 100 murders.
The remains unearthed in Amatitlan may be those of a family who were kidnapped in the town almost a year ago, media accounts suggested.
