A Malaysian Airlines passenger plane carrying 239 people vanished from radar screens at 02:40 local time (18:40GMT).

The jet, on a regular route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing vanished from the radar just south of Vietnam had passengers from 14 different countries on board including four Americans, one of whom is reported to be a baby.

Although Malaysia Airlines has yet to confirm that the jet has crashed Reuters are quoting a senior Vietnamese naval official who has stated the plane came down in The South China Sea.

Conflicting reports from Lt General Vo Van Tuan of the Vietnamese Army said:

“The plane lost all contact and radar signal one minute before it entered Vietnam’s air traffic control,” (source)

More than ten hours after losing contact with the plane there is still no official confirmation as to where it is.

People waiting to greet passengers from the flight are gathering at a hotel near Beijing airport to await news.
