Placido Domingo Delivers His 700th Performance at New York’s Met Opera House
Spanish tenor Placido Domingo celebrated his 700th performance at New York’s Metropolitan Opera House and the 3,700 performances he’s given worldwide during his career with a new interpretation of “The Enchanted Island.”
“I give thanks to God, to music and to the public for making this possible,” Domingo said in a Twitter posting.
The 73-year-old singer also made clear Saturday night his intention to continue performing, saying – in English – “If I rest, I rust.”
Domingo is currently starring in the role of Neptune in “The Enchanted Island” and has received significant praise from critics for his performance.
On March 7, The New York Times devoted a lengthy piece to Domingo in which it emphasized his move to singing baritone and his consequent ability to prolong his career.
Domingo, who gives his last performance in “The Enchanted Island” in the Big Apple on March 20, will continue pursuing a hectic schedule all this year at the world’s top theaters.
His next performance will start on March 27 in Valencia, Spain, where he will star in Giuseppe Verdi’s opera “Simon Boccanegra.”
