TND Exclusive: By Eric Dubin
A Facebook posting with less than 100 “shares” will no doubt go “viral” by the end of the week. The management of Backstreets Pub & Grill posted the following sign in their window:
This is not going over well, as can be seen by reviews posted at Yelp. Click here to see the reviews. As an example, one reviewer noted:
Was in town for a business conference and stopped by for lunch. On the window there was a sign that said:
“No Concealed Weapons Allowed. If you are such a loser that you feel a need to carry a gun with you when you go out, I do not want your business. Douchebag”
I respect the rights of owners that don’t want people with CCW’s in their business but this is totally juvenile and uncalled for. I hope the owner of this business realizes the errors in their ways and issues a public apology to the nation. I say nation because I live in San Diego and travel alot as I’m sure alot of other people do. I come to Clemson quite often and will not set foot in this business and I will ensure all my business associates know about this place. This is not good business!
It’s unfortunate that regardless of where one stands on the issue, many Americans are not capable of having a calm, mature discussion about firearms. This is most certainly important when reviewing violent crime statistics in the context of high gun ownership regions (violent crime and gun deaths are lower in areas where gun ownership is high).
School shootings are also not an issue that’s rationally discussed. Most of the violence is associated with whacked-out kids on doctor-prescribed “anti-depressant” drugs. Guns were always a part of American culture — even more so many decades ago, when kids would go hunting after school, target shoot, etc. Yet somehow, school shootings were extremely rare during this earlier period. What’s the primary change between then and now? Drugged-up kids. There’s also little real discussion about the merits of concealed carry permits for teachers and armed law enforcement officers within schools. Instead, we simply get hysteria from the mainstream media.
I’d respect those that want to restrict guns far more so if they conducted themselves with a higher standard of debate and at least listened to the facts presented by those working to maintain gun rights. To be sure, both sides demonstrate hyperbole from time to time, but the lion’s share of examples come from those that seek to restrict or abolish gun rights. The facts about gun ownership and crime statistics do not support “gun grabber” arguments. It’s far easier to just label gun rights advocates and gun owners “douchebags” and call it a day.
